MOTIVATING YOURSELF AND OTHERS
WHAT
IT MEANS
Motivation
is one and the only ingredient that is capable of taking out the best in us,
turning our mediocre living to a purposeful and best living. I feel that it is a desire and some energy
which gets sparked off due to some conscious or sub conscious factors which
makes us continuously interested in a certain piece of work. Those factors may
be our own intense desire or need, wanting a reward or fulfilling others
expectations. For example a student spends every night studying and do lot of
hard work more than their counterparts?
The
answer lies in the word motivation. It may be that she has a strong desire of
becoming a Doctor or any other Professional. It can also be because of her need
for through knowledge. So motivation basically explains what we do.
The
forces causing motivation may be biological, social, emotional or cognitive in
nature. There are theories developed by various psychologists for creating a
better understanding of motivation. These are –
1-
INSTINCT THEORY OF MOTIVATION
As
per this theory it is because of the evolutionary traits of organisms that
motivate them to behave in certain ways. For examples birds do not learn to
migrate but it is in their evolution. All the emotions like – attachment, play,
anger, shame, fear, shyness, love are human instincts.
2-
INCENTIVE THEORY OF MOTIVATION
This
theory suggests that man works in lieu of getting some reward or incentive. For
example people go to office to get monetary award in the form of salary.
Without salary they won’t work at all.
3-
DRIVE THEORY OF MOTIVATION
According to
this theory people work to reduce their inner anxiety and tension created
because of any unmet need of theirs. For example we immediately are drawn to
drink water to reduce our discomfort caused due to thirst.
4-
ARROUSAL THEORY OF MOTIVATION
According
to this theory man is motivated to maintain an optimum level of arousal. When
arousal level gets low people go for jogging etc. and when arousal levels gets
high people read books or sit down to mediate.
5-
HUMANISTIC THEORY OF MOTIVATION
This
theory stresses upon various cognitive reasons behind an individual to perform
a particular task. These are different levels of needs as explained by Maslow’s
need hierarchy Theory. First set of needs are the basic biological needs of
food, and shelter and other needs of love, safety and esteem are fulfilled.
Then an individual looks forward to fulfill his self actualization needs that
are to fulfill one’s individual potential.
